Short Breaks for Children and Young People with a Disability
The government have provided funding until March 2011 for local areas to offer additional short breaks, this programme will increase the number and choice of breaks during this period to enable information to be gathered about the types of activities most preferred by families, also to measure the success of the organisations who are delivering the services and see if parents, children and young people are satisfied with the short break they receive.

During this year it will be important to gather feedback from families to enable the Local Authority to find out how best to ensure families who care for children and young people with disabilities can access short beaks following 2011 when the New ‘Short Breaks Duty’ will come into place. |
The Short Breaks programme this year will help us to identify who can offer short breaks that are value for money (good quality, appropriate provision, at a fair cost), what is sustainable, (can be continued following March 2011) and how local communities can develop activities to include children and young people with disabilities on a regular basis, after school, weekends and school holidays.
The Aiming High for Disabled Children Short Breaks Programme have now confirmed the providers who will be delivering short breaks for during 2010 /11.
During the next year, over 45,000 hours of short breaks will be offered to children and young people with disabilities in Stockport. These hours are spread over a wide variety of providers offering different types of short breaks:
- Youth clubs
- Sporting opportunities
- Play
- Activity holidays away
- Bushcraft lessons and holidays
- Fun days out
- Family support
- Residential overnights
- Home from Home carers
- 1:1 support for the family in their own home
- 1:1 support in the community
- And more!
Who can access these breaks?
These services are provided for children and young people with a disability who cannot access universal services (those that are open to everyone) alone. If children or young people are already known to Stockport Children and Young People’s Disability Partnership, they can be signposted to the Short Breaks Programme by a professional working with them.
If you are the parent or carer of a disabled child or young person aged between 0-19, and would like to find out if any of the Short Breaks programme of activities would be good for you, and to see if your child is eligible to receive short breaks, please contact Jane Dwyer on 0161 426 5515 or jane.dwyer@stockport.gov.uk
The Short Breaks team will need some information about your child or young person to be able to match your requirements with the breaks on offer. The easiest way to provide this is through the Common Assessment Framework (CAF), many children and young people with a disability already have one of these in place that can easily be updated, if a new CAF is necessary this can be completed by any number of professionals who know your child or family. This could be a teacher, GP, health worker, Parent Partnership Advisor, connexions or youth worker etc. For more information about the CAF ring or e-mail Jane at the above contact details.
