What is the Clinic Service?
We are a team of Speech and Language Therapists who provide assessment and management of children’s speech and language difficulties
Why would my child be seen by the Clinic Service?
Children are assessed by the Clinic service Speech and Language Therapists when:
- They are preschool and their speech and/or language appears to be developing slowly
- They are school-aged and only have speech sound difficulties
What does the Speech and Language Therapist do?
Once referred your children will be assessed by a Speech and Language Therapist at either Hazel Grove Clinic or Beckwith House.
From this assessment you and your child will either be:
- given advice and discharged
- given a programme that will be demonstrated by the Speech and Language Therapist for your use at home
- put on a waiting list for a series of group sessions (the most effective mode of delivery for many speech and language difficulties)
- occasionally put on a waiting list for 1:1 therapy
Where appropriate the Speech and Language Therapist may, with your permission, liaise with your child’s school/pre-school
Discharging from Speech and Language Therapy
Your child will be discharged from the Clinic service when:
- Your child’s speech and/or language skills are within the normal range
- Your child’s speech, language and communication skills are in line with their generlal learning skills and strategies are in place to maximise communication potential.
- When your child’s speech is intelligible.
Following discharge:
If new difficulties with your child’s communication skills arise which are not covered by the recommendations already provided, then a re-referral can be made.
Should you simply wish to make a brief enquiry about something we have recommended, we continue to be available for advice if and when required without the need for a re-referral.
