Transfer to Primary School for Children in Resourced Nursery Provision
Due to their special educational needs, your child may have received a Resourced Nursery place for their Early Years Foundation Stage, so that their needs could be appropriately met.
During late autumn term the Nursery Teacher will invite you to a meeting to discuss your child’s progress and to consider an appropriate school for them to transfer to the following academic year.
The Nursery will send the recommendations of this meeting to the Local Authority, including your views, those of the professional who have been working with your child, and your preference for their forthcoming school placement.
During the spring term the Local Authority will consider the recommendations sent by the Nursery and take the following action; If it is considered that your child has significant special educational needs we may request that a Statutory Assessment of their needs is carried out, which will indicate the type of provision that your child will require to best meet their individual difficulties. If it is considered that your child will be suitable to attend a mainstream school, decisions will then be made regarding their SEN registered stage and if they require support on entry to their local school
Secondary School Transfer for pupils who have a Statement of Special Educational Needs
The secondary school transfer process, for pupils with a Statement for their special educational needs, begins in the Autumn Term of Year 5. This is to ensure that schools have time to fully prepare for a pupils transfer into their next educational phase, taking into account the individual needs of each child.
During the Autumn term of Year 5 you will receive a Transfer Booklet that will explain the process more fully, and ask you to start to give some consideration to the school that you might wish your child to transfer to.
It may be appropriate for school to invite you to a review meeting during the summer term of your child’s Year 6, in order to meet the Special Needs Co-ordinator of the receiving secondary school. This will be an opportunity to share information and therefore ensure a smooth and happy transition for your son or daughter.
In the Summer Term of Year 5, the Headteacher of your child’s present school will invite you to a Transfer Review Meeting. During the meeting your child’s Statement will be reviewed and careful consideration will be given to your child’s special needs and the best type of school to meet those needs on transfer to secondary school. At this point you can state your preference for a particular school. The recommendations from the meeting, including your views, those of the professionals working with your child, and your secondary school preference, will be sent to the Local Authority for consideration.
Please be aware that pupils with Statements for their Special Educational Needs will not receive an admissions form in year 6, as your school preference will have already been logged at the year 5 transfer meeting. It is therefore very important that you make consideration for your preferred secondary school prior to this meeting, to ensure that the Local Authority is aware of your wishes by the end of your child’s year 5 summer term.
Transfer for pupils leaving Year 11 who have a Statement for their Special Educational Needs

The Connexions Service may have already offered advice and information to your son or daughter, about opportunities which may be available to them in the local colleges, and they may also be able to help you return application forms or submit a request for a place. At the end of Year 11 your child’s statement will cease, unless exceptional circumstances prevail.
